I’m not afraid of standing alone.
I’m afraid of the closeness
that is only a veil
hiding distances we can’t cross.
I’m not afraid of the silence.
I’m afraid of the empty words
that guard the meaning
we both need to hear.
I’m not afraid of the time we spend apart.
I’m afraid of the time we spend together,
hoping we were somewhere else.
I’m not afraid of what I might lose.
I’m afraid of what I might become
if my words don’t speak the truth,
if my actions don’t follow,
and if I choose comfort
which loves none,
only starves the goodness
we’re both made of.
